Early in the week I was talking to my sister who recently got engaged. We were talking and she jokingly said "well I am going to wear the pants in that relationship." That got me thinking about what we learned in class about idioms and metaphors. I understood what she meant by that but if you actually think about the phrase it does not make much sense and it does not mean the same thing literally. I started to wonder how did this phrase come about?
One of my roommates always plays music in her room, last night I was listening to her music and one of the lyrics caught my attention, it said "the apple of my eye". This lyrics made me think about how we learned about idioms in class. I got to thinking that many songs (I mostly think of rap songs) have idioms and metaphors in them, mainly it is to keep the lyrics PG while still implying what that actually want to say. I post a link to the song that my roommate was listening to the other day.
The website below has many different comics that use the literal meaning of what was said. This is related to what we learned about sematics and that context helps with figuring out meanings.
When we first talked about semantics and the phrase "It's all semantics" my first thought for this blog was the story book Amelia Bedelia. She was a maid and she did everything she was told to do but she took it very literally. I added a link to a reading of the book.
